Orchids

The UK is home to a wide range of stunning orchids, from the abundant Common Spotted Orchid to the rare and magnificent Lady's Slipper. 52 species in total are found on our shores, ranging in habitats as diverse as the dense pine forests of the North, the bogs, heaths and mires of the Welsh uplands, from the unusual networks of limestone pavements, to the classic orchid strewn grasslands. These beautiful flowers are a must-see during the spring and summer months, and snapshots of several species are illustrated below.

  1. Isn't this year rather significant for Lady's slipper orchids. It's the centenary of the declaration of it's extinction. 100 years from extinction and look at its remarkable recovery. With a little help from a few friends! Where's the celebration of this remarkable landmark in its history?

  2. Garden soil consists of soil from different places that are found in nature i.e. flower beds, gardens etc. While potting soil is a collection of soil from different containers (both indoor and outdoors), mixed and put together.

  3. There is currently a new orchid species for the UK which lays claim to the rarest- it was found in Suffolk in 2021. I saw it in 2022, identified it as Serapias bergonii. Used to be 2 plants, now only one due to damage
